Clean, cozy, and friendly. The Cochinita Pibil was tender and delicious although I didn't realize when ordering that it literally was just a bowl of pork with a side of diced picked red onions and the tortillas...So be sure to have a friend nearby to poach some black beans and rice. I loved that spicy sauce and the horchata. I think next time I'll stick to the main menu with set platters for a more rounded meal.

recently went in for a quick lunch. Had my 4 month old son with me. ordered the "poc chuc". Freaking amazing! Pork chop, cabbage salad, rice, salsa, beans, and tortilla for 12 bucks! Also the owner/manager (not sure) was really nice and offered to hold my son for a couple minutes while i ate. I will def be back!

Good food, creative dishes, nice atmosphere and great friendly service! We even got complimentary drinks. The downside is the drinks were WAY too sugary (not so good). Food was tasty though! What I really like most of all is that POC CHUC is fun to say...

The food has love in it.... apparently love tastes frikken awesome because I ate myself silly. The service was absolutely fantastic. Our server wrangled our large birthday-party like a pro. Ive only been once, but I think its one of my favorite spots. The poc chuc dish, and the prawns dish are tasty.

As the others have indicated place is great! Don't let the front entrance deter you from experiencing such wonderful food. The meals are well priced and generous. The service is very friendly and efficient.

This Yucatecan/Mayan restaurant lived up to the heavy hype. The pollo pibil was possibly the best chicken I've ever had. It was unbelievably tender and succulent. Also delicious were the accompanying corn tortillas and black bean puree. Other dishes were merely good, not amazing, though they were all high quality, and I appreciated eating things I'd never eaten before.

Went to Poc Chuc last night for the first time and was pretty impressed. It's not high-brow fare by any means, just good casual Mayan cuisine. It's not your typical Mexican joint either as the dishes tend more towards cooked and stewed items. The Pollo Pibli was pretty awesome, falling of the bone tender, well seasoned, and the black bean puree was phenomenal. I don't want to know what goes into making these as I'm sure it's not that healthy, but oh so yummy. The accompanying vegatble-boullion rice was a bit oily though but still good. Overall, this place is a find and stands out in a sea of mediocre Mexican in the Mission. Would definitely return.

Man, you Yelpers are letting me down. I had high expectations of this place. It was fine. Not even good, but fine. I think we had the Mayan platter. The price was right, but the food way kind of bland (even when you throw the sauces over top). Just fried tortillas with dried up meat in them. The empanada was poor. The pureed black beans were average. The (giant) watermelon juice was pretty good. The service was great (we went at a very slow time). However, all the great service in the world doesn't make up for mediocre food. I did not have the plantains. If you don't know, I am infatuated with plantains - especially when they're ripe and fried. I'm sure that would have brought it up a star. Due to all the positive reviews, I might go back and give it another try with something different from the menu. As of right now though, I would not recommend it.

Yuum, Went here for the first time tonight. Was a little more expensive than I had expected, otherwise would have gotten five stars. The big sampler that you share before meal to start was excellent, the empanada was especially delicious; apparently they are offered at lunch for $2/ and I would def. be back for that! The Poc Chuc entree ($14) was equally delicious, particularly the roasted onions (almost sweet, with that delicious roasted flavor I normally only get with an outside BBQ) and the black bean puree. Mmmmm. My friend's vegetable taco plate ($7) looked like a good deal, and I really would love to try the mole next time. Like I said, a tad expensive perhaps, from what I expected. Also, the pace is pretty slow (don't be afraid to ask for water, check, etc) but I actually like this. Very relaxing, would be a cool date place. Also, service was stellar, very friendly.

$4 tacos (for 2). these were awesome, slow roasted pork shoulder (cochinita pibil) with amazing spicy salsa. gotta go back for all the other recommended stuff.

  • J M.

The food was tasty - the atmoshpere...well, as you might see from all of the posts on Feb 2,3,4 about 40 Yelp-staff were there. Ouch! One of them puts it correctly saying "My apologies to the other few tables in the restaurant for our noise level, but 40 marketing peeps can be quite a rowdy bunch." Suggestion: next time say hi to the other diners or buy 'em a beer ;) I'm really looking forward to going back when it is a little more "normal" - but that being said....the handmade tortillas were great, and I think the Chicken Pibil was my favorite (though the Poc Chuc was also good).

Returned on a busy night and it was laughably bad. Flavorless. Made some of us want to order out for real food. Lack of alcohol or corkage service was a drag.

A nice companion piece to the Mi Lindu restaurants, Poc Chuc had a lot to offer. Off the 'main strip' meaning not on mission or valencia, this place really impressed me. I had the poc chuc, really good cuts of pork, and served with home made tortillas. Had the watermelon fresca to wash it down. I want to try the duck next! Sampled the lamb/carrot dish - equally good. You can BYOB if you wish.

Really good food. Try the Cochinita Pibil -- slow cooked, marinated pork. It's authentic yucatecan food and it's delicious. Service was earnest but a little slow. They were very friendly and hospitable, however.

I ate here a couple of weeks ago and I seriously don't remember what I ordered, but it was damn good. The shrimp entree was amazing and so was the beef one, they're hard to miss.

Being from Miami I crave anything to remind of the Caribbean food I grew up with. Poc Chuc is not the perfect fit, but I enjoy their food and service. The atmosphere is wonderfully casual without the greasy diner look. Prices are reasonable. This was my second visit and look forward to many future visits.

I originally ordered the carne tomatillada (not sure on the name) but they were out, so they gave me free guacamole and i ended up going with the poc chuc. The guac was good, but nothing to rave about the chips were homemade, very good The poc chuc was amazing. The meat was perfect - tender and had a ton of flavor, definitely marinated for a while, and the portion was quite generous. The black bean puree was to die for - i have made these a few times, but mine don't come anywhere close. I rarely finish a big plate of food, but I polished this one off. Oh, and the horchata was the best I have had in a long time. Perfect amount of fresh, toasted cinnamon, not too watery and not too thick. The server was prompt and courteous, the food came out very quickly. I may try a couple of other places, but this definitely made the short list, and I definitely see myself coming back any time im in the mood for Mayan food, which will definitely be more often now that Ive been here!

Dinner at Poc Chuc was great. Came here after getting off the BART in the mission and doing a quick yelp search. The food was excellent. I got the Pollo Pibil and my boyfriend got the Poc Chu. We both loved our dishes and they came with a good amount of food. And the service was great! In the middle of our meal the waiter came by with some Aguas Frescas for us to try for free! The watermelon flavor was amazing and fresh. I would definitely go back to this place!

  • Peter B.

Their satisfyingly delectable slow cooked entrees and hospitable waitstaff make this place an overall stand-out dining option in the Mission. For those that have become bored and bloated by the denizens of taquerias in the Mission- this is the place you never thought to look for. Yucatan entrees are mouthwateringly meaty and saucy experiences, with a focus on blends of herbs and cooked vegetables infusing into generous cuts of meats. Handmade tortillas and chips gallore. Homestyle rice pilaf. Every time I come here, the waiters seem to assess each personality appetite and complete whatever your meal lacked by offering a freebie item -- on the house!

their dishes were not exactly the traditional mexican food. it's more Mayan or Guatemala style very fresh and home made.

  • Corey V.

Friendly, fast, clean and fairly cheap. BYOB is a great thing, but I may have overdone it with the couple of master cylinders I knocked down. Actually I know I over did it because I can't remember what I ate or even leaving the place, but I do know I really like the food.

yum! came again for lunch and got the platillo maya for two (light lunch). delicioso. though a lot of the ingredients were the same, it tasted unique and fresh and crispy with every bite. fantastic and refreshing taken from their online menu: Panucho: Hand made tortilla filled with black bean puree, slightly fried, topped with shredded turkey, lemon marinated cabbage, pickled red onions and avocado, sprinkled with ground black pepper Salbute: Hand made tortilla puff, slightly fried, topped with shredded turkey, lemon marinated cabbage, pickled red onions and avocado, sprinkled with ground black pepper Empanadas: Half folded hand made tortilla stuffed with ground pork, served on a bed of black bean puree and tomato/onion sauce Tostada: Crisp corn tortilla topped with black bean puree and queso fresco Kotzito: Crisp taco covered with tomato/onion sauce and queso fresco damn. really good. for $10!!

I have to agree it doesn't look too much from outside, but we liked it once we went inside. The service was a little slow, but the food was worth the wait, we started off with a strawberry drink, horchata, plantains and guacamole, all really good! Ended up ordering the appetizer sampler and carne asada, which all three of us found nummy!

This restaurant is best described for me in one word - average! Although the atmosphere and the restaurant itself was clean and inviting the food left a lot to be desired... The portions also seemed to be a little on the small side considering how much they charged. Believe me, I'm a true foodie (specifically with hispanic food) and don't mind spending my cash if the food is worth it. Unfortunately this restaurant wasn't worth it. Sorry charlie...

I enjoyed the food I ate, but my favorite was the Horchata. It's amazingly tasty! :D

With so many casual taquerias in the area offering the same exact menu, Poc Chuc is refreshing change of pace, offering more creative, higher end, (yet still affordable and unpretentious) fare.

A really cool place down in my hood. When I first walked in, there wasn't anyone there except for a little boy who handed me a menu and asked "Comida?" Really funny. I ordered the Ensalada Mixto, which was this delicious fresh salad with a perfect amount of dressing on it. It had onions, tomatoes and queso fresca on the top. Very tasty. I then had the Poc Chuc which is a pork dish. It comes with a bunch of sides as well, which I loved, such as the refried black beans which went perfectly with my rice. There's a nice little salad that comes with it with some salsa on it. It also comes with a bunch of hot corn tortilla's. Watch out for the salsa they give you. It's made from Habenero peppers. MUY Picante ;) The pork was tender but was a little fatty. If I ate it alone, it had a type of "gas" taste to it, probably because it was cooked over a gas stove instead of wood or charcoal. -1 star for that. That's my only recommendation, is to cook the meat without gas because the taste of it goes right into the meat. I had the Jamaica drink which was large and also delicious. As I was leaving they were sweeping the floors around me and putting the chairs on the table, which was strange for a Monday at around 5PM. I am definitely coming back here with my friends, just for the BYOB! I can't wait to bring some of the new shipment of Bella wine I received ;)

We had: 1) Fried plantains with sour cream - really good, but nothing special here. 2) Homemade chips and guac - yum, these homemade chips are delicious. And the guac is really good. 3) Poc Chuc - I highly recommend this entree. Everything goes together perfectly. I'm sure there's a good reason why the restaurant is called Poc Chuc. 4) Slow-cooked shredded pork. Another really good dish - the pork was really tender with great seasoning. Much more appropriate-sized portion relative to the Poc Chuc, which was huge. 5) Watermelon Aqua Fresca - not impressive, wish I had just gotten water. Overall, this was a great experience. I would give it 4.5 stars. I do wish they served a little alcohol. Definitely worth a return visit.

The freshest Mexican food I think I have ever eaten. The tortillas are phenomenal, the meat was not dry or overcooked. I usually feel a bit gross after Mexican, with this place I left simply happy and full. The pork tacos are amazing. Actually, everything was amazing, even my lemonade.

I love this place. Too bad the city has nothing better to do than prevent them from implementing their BYOB policy (damn progressives with too much time on their hands) - used to be much more fun that way. But their staff is super nice, food is amazing, and their prices are very reasonable for the quality of food. I'm craving it now just thinking about their pork shoulder dish..

  • Cat R.

Very yummy!! It's like a twist on home cooked mexican cuisine. We had the taco like dish, a chicken and pork dish. We came here for a late sunday lunch, and it's certainly not a cute "date" kind of place. But, everything was so well priced, and the food tasted like it took hours to make. Give this place to try if you want venture away from your standard mexican or brazilian place!!!

First of all, all members of the staff are very friendly. They gave all members of our party a free try of their special flavored drinks (horchata, watermelon, pineapple, strawberry, and two other flavors). I am a fan of horchata and their version is especially refreshing. I ordered a large glass. Also, if you sit near the kitchen, you can watch a member of the kitchen staff hand-making perfectly formed tortillas for your consumption. The food is delicious. The namesake dish, Poc Chuc, is a great dish of citrus-marinated grilled pork, fresh cabbage, grilled onions, fresh salsa, a tasty rice. I parts items are separate so you can eat by themselves or combine at your pleasure with the homemade tortillas. Our group also tried a couple of the chicken dishes, which were all fall- off-the-bone good and were cooked perfectly so that they literally fell off of the bone! Try this place and you will not be disappointed.

wow, i am very pleasantly surprised by this place!! i would have never thought to venture to this corner of 16th street. this restaurant serves mayan food in hearty portions at a great value. we started off w/ some fried plantains which were not oily at all. we also got the appetizer platter which is gigantic and a great deal for $10. it comes w/ an assortment of things that i cannot even begin to describe. i got the veggie combo for my entree which came w/ an empanada and two tostada type things. all were delicious, and it was only $9!! my friends who got the meat dishes were also pleased, and they all came w/ a side of refried BLACK beans, rice and deliciously hot tortillas. BYOB w/ free corkage. you can't beat that!

  • Jason M.

Great food, reasonable price. I followed by friend's advice and ordered the Poc Chuc - marinated pork. Took the pork along with the black beans and tortillas to make myself some little tacos. (Even though it is not Tex Mex food, it is difficult not to make tacos when i see the little corn tortillas - especially when there is also hot sauce on the table.) The restaurant is small, but definitely worth the wait if there is a line. Hope to be back there soon.

The food was excellent and the service was too. Unfortunately, they no longer allow you to BYOB, but I love it anyway. The tortillas are amazing!

I love this place! The pollo pibil is amazing and the prices and portions are very decent. You can BYOB, as they do not serve alcohol. Is conveniently on the 33 Muni line and near the 16th st Muni/BART. Also really enjoyed the poc chuc and panuchos, mmm, I'm hungry now!

  • Jessica T.

This place is fantastic. Super amazing tortillas and we had plantains for an appetizer AND dessert. It's family run and everyone was very helpful and friendly. It looks small, but they saved us a big table because I had made a reservation online earlier in the week. Six of us ate dinner and everyone enjoyed their meal! The only thing I would be wary of is their menu online. They had a number of vegetarian dishes listed, but the menu at the restaurant only had ONE. Luckily, one vegan and two vegetarians loved the dish, but they didn't have much choice. They probably could make just about any dish veggie by holding the meat, but as for listed options, there aren't many.

Great restaurant, in part because of the unique cuisine. Mayan fusion gets me hot. Service was super sweet. They gave us a round of sangria for free...I think because it was almost closing time and they were low on their signature rice. The Poc Chuc is extremely tasty: thinly-sliced pork, with black beans, fresh tortillas and the aforementioned rice. Props to the Yelper who suggested making the Plato Vegetariano version of their five-appetizer plate, my girlfriend was way into it. I couldn't convince her that she didn't just pick from among the five appetizers for the $10 price. Yeah, five autentico apps for the price of some hipster chef's experimental creation. With all of the over-priced, over-hip spots popping up just east of Mission Street, this is a refreshing alternative. The simple, colorful interior has a nice palette...though it's none too fancy. Bring your real food-lovin' peeps to this one, not the poseurs!

We stopped in here on a whim after attending a friends art exhibit down the street. Having no idea what to expect, we were really surprised at just how good everything was. We had the pork and carne asada respectively and it was honestly some of the best meat we've had anywhere in a long time. I usually hate to use the description that food tastes like homemade, but the carne asada really reminded me of barbecuing with my family when I was little. It's a very specific flavor and it's been a long time since I've experienced it. The rice, salad, interesting appetizers, etc. were all fantastic. The only item that could've used a bit more flavor was their black bean puree. Considering they use it in just about everything however, a little salt or spice would do it wonders. Also, the portions on the entrees were very generous. We really liked this place and would definitely go back.

I was impressed. First, by the exterior. You would not say there is a restaurant hiding in there if it wasn't for the sign on the street "Platillos Mayas con una nueva visión (Mayan food with a new vision)" and the "Open" light. Inside, the restaurant is warm and cozy. Clean and with a good display of colors and decorations. Second, I was impressed by the cooks. You will see a big man working non stop in the kitchen, helped by a lovely woman. They are both the masterpieces of this place. And the food they serve is excellent. I visited the place for a birthday celebration. With 16 persons at a table in a small restaurant, you can expect many flaws in service and quality. Not a single one. The food was cooked to order, the tortillas were homemade and warm. They arrived by batches, always at the right time. Carne Asada was delicious, the beef is sooooo juicy with some braised veggies, salad and white rice. And the frijoles negros (black beans) are a thin puree, almost like a sauce, that they serve on the side. You will not find the typical lard flavour in those, as it is usual in Mexican restaurants here. I ordered my favourite Mayan dish: Cochinita Pibil. The best I ever tasted. Cooked to perfection in a delicious broth, not too spicy but with a very nice mild chili taste. And the shredded pork was so easy to eat, no fat, no chewing and chewing... I never ate Mayan food in Mexico and I know that the most frequent complaints by Mexican food gourmets is that no Mexican food in the US can compare to that cooked in Mexico. Nevertheless, I am pretty sure that those Mexican gourmets will agree with me that this restaurant is still "pure" and keeps the flavors, textures and cooking tradition of Yucatán. If you want to know what I mean, try their "Mole" ahumado.

This was my first time eating Mayan food in the states and I have to say I was impressed. I have been to Yucatan, Mexico and I can't remember the food being this good. My husband and I started off with the panucho and salbute. They are almost like tostadas or sopes but better. I love that they use red cabbage and shredded turkey. You feel like you are eating healthy even though the salbute shell is probably fried. I also liked the habanero salsa that they provide on the side. What a kick to the palate! I ordered the Poc Chuc as my main dish and my honey had the Pollo Pibil. The grilled pork was not dry. It was cooked just right and when you add a squeeze of lime even better. My husband's chicken fell right off the bone. Oh and I loved the handmade tortillas. We had to order a second round because we devoured the order that came with our food. We were not even charged extra. I will definitely go back and I have made up my mind on what I am going to order next time. I wouldn't mind going back sometime this week but we're trying to eat out less. Healthier and cheaper but that's no fun.....

This has got to be my new favorite restaurant in the Mission! I went to Poc Chuc for my fiance's sister's birthday, and we all loved it! Very homemade and family owned restaurant. Even a little kid (probably the owner or manager's kid) greeted us when we got there and when we left. On the outside, you probably wouldn't think to go here, but when you walk in, it's got nice decor and a homey feel. Three of us ordered the "Poc Chuc" which was grilled citrus pork with rice, beans, and salad. I FELL IN LOVE AT FIRST BITE!! The pork was so juicy and actually tasted like a juicy steak! Their tortillas and salsa were also delicious. Two people in our group ordered their fresh lemonade which was so refreshing. The size of the glass of lemonade was more like a small pitcher! Another thing i love about this place is that it is not pricey at all! Very reasonable and affordable prices, and the portions are huge! My fiance and I have been raving about this place to all our friends. We loved their service and we can't wait to come back and try out other stuff on the menu!

What a great place. Everything from the appetizers, Jamaica (hibiscus) to drink, my chicken dish, my husband's beef dish, my friend's lamb dish and his friend's pork dish, all was absolutely delicious! The guacamole was tasty, and their tortillas must be the best ones I've ever had. I can't wait to go back.

The food is delicious here! I highly recommend this restaurant for its dishes that burst with flavor. My friends and I shared the appetizer sampler then the entrees- poc chuc, braised pork shoulder in annatto sauce, and pork shoulder in a tomato sauce. We all loved the rice that was simply flavored with bouillon and found the refried black beans satisfying. I especially liked my entree which was the pork shoulder in a tomato sauce because the pork was tender and soaked up the tasty sauce perfectly. Besides the divine food, the service was great. I am definitely returning.

Great serving size and great service. It is also a place where you can BYOB with no corkage fee and that is why I gave it a 4 star. The food though generous is average.

I've always passed by this place on my way to work and was always curious to try it out. I went with a couple of co-workers during lunch and were seated immediately. About 30 minutes later, the place was just packed and could see why after sampling one of their dishes. I ordered the fried fish which definitely hit the spot. We were also given free samples of the horchata and the tamarindo drinks. Both complimented our meals really well. Next time, I'm going for the Poc Chuc! Service was just flat out excellent! Definitely coming back.

Next time I go there, I'm going to get just the steak tacos...maybe like 45 of them. The rest of the food was okay. The shrimp was overcooked and bland. I took my wife here for our 1st anniversary and it was cool for a mom and pop, have your store mail scattered over a broken chair type restaurant. The server didn't speak much English which is ok but she wasn't too nice either. The prices were good and I'm sure there are more items that were very good than what I had. I did order one steak taco and it might've been the best steak taco I've ever had. Oh, and its BYOB which is always cool.

3 stars for the food, which was good and fresh but not exceptional, 5 stars for the service - nicest waiter you could imagine - kind, attentive, enthusiastic, treated use like family. examples: * we arrived 45 minutes late for our reservation. he still had our table and said he was just really glad we could make it. * no liquor license, so he told us to get a bottle across the street and immediately provided glasses and served * we had some special requests for order changes that he accomodated like it was his favorite thing to do in the world. I wouldn't travel across the city for this one, but if you lived nearby, support these guys and enjoy the good (if not great) food.

We were looking forward to dinner. We walked in and, as soon as we were in the door, we both froze. What was that smell? I recognized it from my childhood day care center--Pine-Sol! I have almost no sense of smell and to me it was completely overpowering. But we were starving, got a table, menus, but there was no way. We got up and left. One of the very few times I've walked out of a restaurant.

This three-star rating is mainly due to the rather average food. I feel that people have low standards when it comes to Latin American food, because they are use to the greasy corner taqueria. When I see 4.5 star rating on yelp, I expect the food to be over the top good, and I'd want to go come back and get the same exact dish. I was expecting exotic food when I heard Mayan, but was rather disappointed. I shared the appetizer plate and the Poc Chu entree (recommend by waiter) which was grilled pork. The food that came seemed like pretty generic Latin American food to me. It was certainly fresh and good compared to "average" Latin American food I'm use to, but nothing I'd rave about. The service was good though :)

ok so i went here the first time right after it turned into poc chuc....and they had a much smaller menu so i just had the turkey tacos which were delicious. but i went back with 5 friends last night and it really blew my mind. this place has matured into a full blown gastronomical delight and i cant stop thinking about the food!!! poc chuc was good enough to earn a review from me - i only review good or bad places generally - and it has inspired me to "update my review" a first for me. the slow cooked chicken thigh is to die for. the bean puree is dreamy. and did i mention the reasonable price? wow. i cant stop talking about poc chuc.

I've eaten here several times and loved everything we have ever ordered. The place is quite understated and you might not ever notice it from the outside. They have a black mole dish that really is unusual and quite tasty and as others have mentioned the poc chuc and polo pablil are fantastic. We ordered the chicken macaroni soup for the kids (one is enough for two) and actually we love it as well. The tortillas are excellent and the tacos are fantastic. There was nothing we have tried that was short of fantastic.

I don't really remember what I had, though it was tasty. My girlfriend had this black (really, extremely black; made my black beans look brown) mole-covered turkey, which was spectacular. They also gave us some hot + tasty salsa, which matched it all perfectly.

Any place that smells like my grandma's kitchen gets 5 stars. And it's not just the smell that reminds me of home - it's also the food, the people, the warm smiles of everyone who works there. Yes, it takes awhile to get your check, but can you really complain when the food is homemade, the servers have been known to drop off desserts on the house or bring by an extra agua de sandia, and the company is great? I think my favorite part is bringing new people to this restaurant - you would never expect from the outside that this is a beautiful little gem, tucked behind a car dealership.

great carne asada tacos, and a flavorful tender chicken dish. also tried their poc chuc (pork) dish, but it seemed dry. charming interior. a bit hard to find, and not the nicest of neighborhoods - but the restaurant and food is worth coming back to! the tacos are $3 each, and 2-3 of them would make a full meal - so its a bargain too :)

Took three friends there for a late lunch Saturday. Two of us (including me) had their signature dish--Poc-Chuc, another had two appetizers and another had the vegie Trio. I was really disappointed in the Poc-Chuc. The thin grilled pork slices were filled with fat and gristle, were hard as if over-cooked and the flavor minimal. The accompanying rice was gray and tasteless. The tiny piles of roasted tomatoes and grilled onions were OK but I'd preferr another preparation. The best part of the meal for all of us was the small bowl of black rice puree. The service was wonderful with a very cheerful waiter with a huge smile but he couldn't make up for the lackluster food. I might try them again but I've experienced much better Mexican food elsewhere.

I've always had good food here. The service for lunch on the weekends can inconsistent, but dinner service is awesome. Even if the service is slow, the food and the hot salsa makes it all worth it!

Casual dining, really satisfying, scrumptious food, super friendly service. I rolled up in a party of 6 for a work lunch and they were super accommodating, quick, and brought us free dessert! I really liked the food-nothing fancy, but really tasty. and it was cheap.

I love their poc chuc and pollo pibil... they are my favorite things on the menu. Their homemade tortillas awesome, infact everything on their menu is awesome!! Great food, great prices and the service is imecable! Maybe I'll see you there soon!

i came into this restaurant expecting a typical mexican food restaurant (typical for me means the ones you see along the east coast and the northeast), but the minute i saw the menu i knew it was different. i got the watermelon soda which was good, but the carne asada was delish!! i was there with a group of 8 and they were very accommodating and the wait staff was very friendly!

I have to echo a lot of the other reviews. One of my favorite places in the neighborhood. The chicken is delicious, as is the Platilla Maya appetizer. I don't remember what it is called, but there is a black mole chicken soup that is out of this world. The soup is black as night, which is a little strange at first, but it is ever so delicious. Go to this restaurant!

Oh man! Delicious food. The combination appetizer platter with things I don't know the name of is amazing! I've been here a couple of times and every time I come, I am completely satisfied with my meal. Have ordered the chicken, pork, fish, and beef dishes and all have been amazing! The horchata is what brings me back to this place over and over. sooo good! oh yea, the black bean puree...mmm. Fast and friendly service. A lot of street parking at night in the area. The restaurant is never really that crowded when I go so it's pretty low-key and quiet, good for a nice conversation and a peaceful dinner.

So . . . always a user and not a giver on Yelp . . . BUT tonight the tides have changed. I dig this place . . . so much so that I feel compelled to yelp about it. First off, if you decide to go to this joint make sure to talk with Gonzalo. Such a personable and friendly guy. He'll steer you in the right direction in terms of Menu choices. Although I am a Bay Rea product, my favorite Mexican choices lie in Southern Cal (forget about TX cux TexMex is bland). Aside from "La Taqueria" in the mission and "El Toyanese" taco truck next to Best Buy SF . . . I have never really found a Mexican Joint worthy of Roberto's or Alejandro's or Betto's or Alberto's in LA/SD/AZ (or Taco Factory in Cancun). Now this place isn't your regular order and split place like the aforementioned BUT it is an awesome place nonetheless. I recommend any of the Tacos, or the empenadas (that's what I had tonight). If all else fails make sure to ask Gonzalo what he would have. This place ROCKS and is inexpensive and the atmosphere is good to go. Check this place out AND as previously yelp'd "You won't be disappointed." Enjoy and ask for Gonzalo!

Everything on the menu, both the standard items on the website menu and the daily specials, is completely delicious. Better still, the restaurant is intelligently managed, the staff are charming and thoughtfully helpful, service is prompt, the layout is comparatively roomy, and the sound level is low enough to make conversation easy. Highly recommended, a real find. Important note! Poc Chuc does not sell beer or wine, so it actively welcomes you to bring your own wine. They have a big shelf of sparkling-clean wineglasses and the waiters have corkscrews, and they do NOT charge any corkage charge at all! Their food is so good that it deserves to be accompanied by excellent wine, so you'll be sorry if you forget to bring along a bottle or two.

This is a hidden gem that everybody should try. From the outside, you probably wouldn't want to go inside; however, although small and narrow, it's a well decorated and nice place. The food here is absolutely delicious. From the mixed appetizer plate, to the chicken that falls off the bone, to the braised pork and tacos. It's absolutely delicious. I'm from LA and recently moved from Phoenix and I can honestly say this place ranks up there....not the typical Mexican food (of course, it's Mayan food but lots of similarities)...but absolutely delicious. And, it's BYOB so it's not a pricey night out.

General Thoughts: Don't be fooled by the unassuming hole-in-the-wall-ish storefront - the clean, modern interior is nothing close to a hole in the wall. It's generally a good sign when everything on the menu looks delicious, and though I had a hard time deciding what to order I was not disappointed. I can't wait to come back and try some of their other dishes! For $25 a person we got good portions of food and a high-quality meal. Service: The service was excellent - the waitstaff were super friendly and made us feel right at home. Food: We started with the fried plantains, which were nice and sweet and cut up more like fat french fries. Nothing overly special about this dish, but the plantains were cooked just about right and tasted pretty good on their own, though my personal preference is for cuban style plantains. For the main course, I had the Poc Chuc, which reminds me of Vietnamese bbq pork in taste. Delicious! The pork was thinly cut and tasted even better when I wrapped it all up in corn tortillas with the pureed black beans, salsa, hotsauce, and rice that came with it. My friend had the Estofado de Borrego, which is kind of like a lamb stew with some veggies. I tried some of it and it was yum - I'm not generally a fan of stew-ish things, but this was very flavorful and the lamb not gamey. For dessert we had the warm chocolate souffle with vanilla ice cream. I'm a sucker for warm melty chocolate products, so I was happy.

welcome to your (mayan-mexican) mom's kitchen. we were well cared-for: service was prompt, and the food was very good. this restaurant falls somewhere in-between the lower-key, "authentic" Mission eateries and the super-expensive, trendy hipster joints.

OK - full disclosure. This is my first Yelp review! But, I liked this place so much that I felt I needed to write it. I went for lunch with my son, who's in college in SF. He'd asked them if he could interview them for a paper about Yucatan cuisine and culture. Even though it was lunch time, they took the time to answer his questions (sometimes between courses!) The place doesn't look like much from the outside, but it's got a really nice feel inside. My son had the Pollo Pibil, and I (at the recommendation of our waiter) had the Poc Chuc, which is flattened grilled pork served with lime that was really delicious. They brought my son a couple of side dishes to try, so he got a really good feel for the food, and also some flan for dessert. My son loved it (I'm not a flan fan). All in all, we had a wonderful meal, the service was great and the atmosphere was warm and friendly. I'll definitely go back when I'm in the city again!

The food is reasonably priced and very tasty. Mayan food is a little different than the food in most Mexican restaurants and kind of reminds me of the food I had in Guatemala. I like it because it's a little healthier. Staff is very friendly and brought us samples of their fruit drinks and flan desert. Simple and casual but clean and not too noisy. Will return!

  • J D.

Yes, this place is worthy of 5 stars - as far as Mayan food goes, this place is excellent. It is really a gem in the mission... It is not fancy, and you will need to byob (you can go across the street and purchase drinks), but the food is amazing. I can't wait to go back.

I heart Poc Chuc. The taco's are to die for. The Horchata is excellent along with the plantains.

  • Paul J.

The cost of the dinner menu here isn't in my budget aside for special occasions, but the lunch menu is very reasonably priced and truly excellent. I can't recommend this place enough for people looking for a different side of Mexican cuisine from the standard taqueria fare this restaurant. For people coming here for the first time I would recommend trying something with mole. The mole here is incredible! Its black, and has a very complex and incredible flavor. But as far as I can tell there isn't a bad item on the menu.

  • Anonymous F.

Ok, I still love this place, but last time I went back...a cockroach ran across our table as soon as we sat down. Granted, it was towards the front by the door, and I'm hoping it just ran in off the street. We ate there anyway (a testament to how awesome the food is) and moved to a table towards the back, but it grossed me out to the point that one star had to be deducted.

  • Kei H.

Holy shit! This place is incredible! I'd walked by it about 5 million times and not gone in (mainly b/c I was burned by the yucatecan place that's kitty-corner to Little Star Pizza on Valencia), and I can't believe the food I've been missing out on. Fresh, delicious tortillas, superb rice, perfectly stewed chicken and salsas that really pop with savory goodness. Went here with a couple friends and shared the Platillo Maya appetizer sampler, pollo pibil, poc chuc and relleno blanco. The appetizer plate included an empanada, salbute, panucho, tostada and a tiny flauta-like tortilla roll. It was a riot of perfectly crisped, very toothsome and flavorful tortillas loaded with great toppings - shredded turkey, black bean puree, stewed tomatoes with citrusy bursts throughout plus tomato and habanero salsas. Really sensational. All the mains were equally well executed and tasted like they were cooked with care. As I ate myself into a food coma, I wondered why this place isn't beset with herds of foodies angling for tables every night. I realized why this was when I went to the bathroom. In there, there was a vase with cheap, fake flowers still sporting a big white tag that proclaimed, "MADE IN CHINA $3.50". And then, as I was walking back to my table, I passed by a woman who was matter-of-factly forming little balls of masa from a huge bowl of the stuff and pressing them into tortillas. Basically, this restaurant expends more energy on the food than it does on PR and fru-fru (imagine that!). Which is great for anyone who happens by this rather forlorn stretch of 16th street and ambles in, and unfortunate for all the people who are missing out on some of the best Mexican food in the Mission. And yeah, it's a bit on the spendy side if you're used to tacos for $1.75 from Tonayense. But given the quality of the food, it's an amazing deal. If this place had some fancy-ass hotshot gastro-wunderkind tracked by Michael Bauer fans, you'd never be able to get in and you'd pay out the eyeballs. But they don't. They just have great food.

    (5)
  • david z.

Um, yeah. Don't believe the hype. The service? Nice, but not exactly attentive (or what would you call asking for the bill 3 times?) The food? Strictly mediocre taqueria level quality (meat way overcooked, bland). The price? 4 times what you'd pay at that taqueria ($50 for two, with an appetizer (a taco, essentially), no booze). And no liquor. Stick to cancun and you'll be better off. Yelpers get real.

A friend highly recommended Poc Chuc for its "traditional Mayan" cuisine. I was intrigued by the "traditional Mayan" description, so had to try it. I had the combination appitizer plate, as I wanted to sample a bit of everything they had to offer, as well as a soup with chicken and macarone. I don't recall the name of either, but I thoroughly enjoyed everything. Very fresh, very yummy, and beautifully presented. My only criticism would be that the soup contained perhaps a bit too much macarone, but tasty nonetheless. The service was fast and very friendly; however, the communication a bit difficult. She did provide us with complimentary drinks -- a beautiful red, fruity concoction in a wine glass, which was totally yummy, but due to the language barrier, I have no idea what it was or how to order it again. The gesture, however, was generous and appreciated.

I was a little hesitant when i first arrived, not knowing the area to well it seemed in the middle of no where and when you walk in it was kinda just so so. Let me tell you, this is so misleading... you will love Poc Chuc and should give it a try! I came here with a large group and showed up about 10 mins before anyone else so the owner sat me and talked to me for a little while until others arrived which was soo unnecessary but really sweet! Its BYOB here and they immediately began opening our bottles while we looked over the menu.. By my servers recommendation i got the Camarones al Ajillo (prawns) and LOVED it! the carne asada looked really good to so i want to come back to try it next. My favorite thing about Poc Chuc is the atmosphere.. it was kinda a dive that is definitely a family business with their children running the show.. 1 kid was helping make tortillas (which are amazing by the way) and another kid was harassing the cooks haha.. but we were really well taken care of and left alone when desired to enjoy the company. LOVED IT!

Wonderful flavors, hearty but very healthy, and generous portions. Very affordable, considering sublimely tender, flavorful meats, beautiful presentations, and personable service. Bar Bambino was packed, so I suggested Poc Chuc to my foodie-friends. They couldn't stop raving about it! 4 people: 3 dishes and one appetizer: the platillo, a huge sampler plate of beautiful little tapas style bites, $10 poc chuc, the house-special grilled pork a chicken dish a whole pan-fried fish special (entrees ranged from $9-14) +one agua fresca =$58!! Homemade corn tortillas, black beans -- Mmmmm. Our waiter, Gonzalo, was very friendly and accommodating. He told us that it's "una cocina de abuelita" and that all the guys that work there are from the same village in the Yucatan, and that he went to grade school with some of the other workers. A friendly place with beautiful food. What more could you ask for? Oh -- a liquor license!

rolling in box of twelve fat tire bottles deep...bv wine bottle brown bagged and hand carried...rolling mission poc chuc....providing glasses and cork screw quick....slow to order and platillo maya first..medley sampler platter...panucho, salbute, empanadas, tostada and kotzito...mostly unknown names to self....basically variety of soft, hard, fried, folded, rolled or filled tacos....two mini-saucing spoon servings...green saucing spicy warning...ay caramba!...tamarindo drink cooling...large refreshing glass mug full good...pollo pibil main order...slow braised chicken quarter and seasoned watery rice....black bean puree saucing bowl side...chicken flavorful and rice delicious slurp...quite the excellent meal...typically finding black beans avoiding, but black bean puree quite acceptable tasty...gluttony and tacos de carnitas few dollars thrown in....small taco final snack....over gluttony and banana whip cream sweet saucing dessert finally to $twenty-three per person dinner fit for mayan king....

i wasn't really that hungry on my first visit here and ended up totally ordering the wrong thing (forgot what it was called, but it was a bowl of braised pork and is listed as one of their specials on the back of the menu). thank goodness for fried plantains tho! my friend had the camarones al ajillo which was very tasty, and the hibiscus agua fresca was sweet and refreshing. it was a tad annoying when the restaurant was overtaken by some marina crowd transplants, but whatever--will have to give it a second chance for the food!

My sister and I just ate there for the first time tonight but I can already tell that this will be one of my favorite restaurants. From the outside it looks like any hole in the wall restaurant in the Mission, but you'll be pleasantly surprised. The decor is simple but hip. It's relatively small, with neat wooden tables and chairs, an open and clean kitchen and prep area that we could see from out seats. I was very entertained by the interesting music choices that spanned from George Michael's "I'm Never Gonna Dance Again" to Frankie Valli's "Sherry." All the staff were super friendly and genuine. They took the time to answer all our questions and the food came quickly after we ordered it. My sister and I both decided to get the Platillo Maya for $10. I was surprised by how much I got for such a cheap price. All the ingredients were fresh and the meal was very light and flavorful. We left stuffed and happy! We caught an early dinner on a Tuesday and it was pretty quiet but our waiter said that it gets very busy Saturday nights, so I would make a reservation if you plan on eating on the weekends. They also don't have a liquor license but told us that we were welcome to bring our own alcohol next time. They don't have have many vegetarian options, but I got the impression they would be open to accommodating changes to the food. I was definitely impressed and can't wait to try all they have to offer.

my boyfriend was recommanded this restaurant from a yucantan friend, he told him this place had authentic mayan food. so he decided to take me this one rainy night, which i didnt mind. we we got there we noticed how warm it was, which is good since outside was freezing! but we also noticed it wasnt big. the place probably has around 12 tables. but anywho, when asked what we would like to drink, we asked about their alcoholic drinks, and we were answered they dont sell any kind of alcohol! omg!!!!!!!!!! no alcohol with latin american food? whats going on?? but we managed to live! i had a rice based drink which was good! and i think he jamica. i ordered the poc-chu which the restaurant was named after. it must be good right? well it was!! it was alot of yummy food! rice, beef, beans, grilled onions, and fresh tortillas!!!!!!!!!!!!!! my boyfriend had sheep. he liked it, and too the remaining home. when we asked for it to go we had no tortillas. after we left we looked inside the bag, and they were so nice for giving us more tortillas. PRICES ARE Around $10- $15.. a great price for a lot of food.

Excellent food and service. We ordered the appetizer sampler which was not only a work of art but extra tasty. The turkey tostadas were flavorful and the meat was so juicy. The presentation was also beautiful and everything was so fresh. The black bean puree had lots of flavor and the hand-made tortillas were the best we've had. My husband ordered a chicken dish and it was perfectly prepared and the meat was basically falling off the bone. We would definitely go back when we want a fresh alternative to Mexican food. The food was a bargain given how fresh the ingredients are and given the labor intensive preparation.

this place is great! it doesn't look like much from the outside but really cute on the inside. they were very accommodating for a big party of 14. service was great. we ordered the appetizer sampler and it was pretty good. for the main course i ordered the poc chuc which was very good. the whole dish itself was so simple and delicious. the horchata was refreshing and my friend's chocolate milk with bananas was also very tasty. definitely a bit different from your usual mexican food but it was a nice change. its also byob so i suggest bringing a bottle of your favorite wine too. =)

I know nothing about authentic Mayan food, but I do know good food and Poc Chuc is it! My friend and I went in late Tuesday afternoon and were at first a little apprehensive being that there was only one other couple there, but then again it was an odd time. Well once we got out food, our worries were out the window and so was my failure of a diet. My friend got the Poc Chuc and I opted for the appetizer sampler ( the name escapes me, sorry). We both also got tasty Horchatas that were served in these GIANT 24 oz mugs. The price here is very reasonable for what you get. My friend's Poc Choc ( grilled pork) came grilled onions on a big platter with a side of rice, black beans and warm tortillas. My sampler consisted of 5 appetizers served on a bed of mixed greens. The plates here range in the price of $9-15 for lunch. In all, our tab+tip was $33. Both me and my friend were super glad we made the choice to come and are definately coming back again. Poc Chuc is located a little ways from all the restaurants at Mission and 16th, but worth the walk.

Went here with some friends for a joint birthday celebration. We made reservations about a week beforehand for 8 people, which turned out to be a good call because the place got quite crowded. We took advantage of their BYOB invitation by bringing several bottles of wine. The guacamole was amazing, although a little low on the chip-to-guac ratio (no problem - they brought more chips just 1 minute after we requested them). I had the Platillo Maya for my entree - it was delish. I also took it upon myself to taste my friends' dishes - you know, for yelp review purposes - and they were all amazing. It was definitely plenty of really yummy food, and the meat on the various dishes was incredibly tender. It was also very reasonably priced (even more so with the BYOB option), and we all agreed that we would go back - but with an extra bottle or two of wine (though apparently there is a liquor store very nearby).

My boyfriend and I went to eat dinner here after reading a review on sfgate. I would hands down go any day to Pancho Villa tacqueria (also on 16th) over this. I ordered the Poc Chuc which is strips of pork that were literally half fat and not marinated at all. My boyfriend ordered some turkey soup that looked like Odwalla Superfood and made him puke later. The decor is lousy, the food is really mediocre and overly-priced. We received good service until the large reserved parties started showing. Then we had to ask twice for the check. The only good thing about this place is that you can bring your own booze. I'm glad at least a few other reviewers know what good food is. I'm suprised at so many great reviews - this place sucks ass.

  • suz q.

I'm shocked by the good reviews Poc Chuc has gotten. I give it two stars for having BYOB, but beyond that, the food was completely lackluster. I got the mole chicken, which tasted like a chicken thigh covered in brown gravy. In fact, I'm pretty sure it was brown gravy, and not mole sauce. It was mostly flavorless, except for tasting salty. On my plate besides this was white rice, that's it.

Made a reservation, but they didn't have a table for us when we arrived (WTF?) and we would have had to wait 30 min. So, we went somewhere else. They *did* offer to give us some free appetizers if we waited, and *did* call me on my cell when a table is ready, but still, no table? that's like the first time that's ever happened to me!

this is our favorite neighboorhood place to go. the service is friendly and meals are good! the platillo maya is a meal in itself and is decently priced. Gonzalo is one of the waiters and he is very friendly. the homemade tortillas are delish too. the only thing against this place is the lack of good desserts--they are nothing special. but its great for groups-- BYOB. see you there!

One of my favorite new spots. Everything on the menu is delicious and the waiters couldn't be nicer. Definately try the tacos, turkey mole, and plantains. It's also BYOB, so bring a nice bottle of wine and enjoy!

all I gotta say is...no more BYOB and the restaurant does not serve any alcohol either. apparently they got reported for allowing folks to BYOB. as such, probably not worth the trek just for the food. booooo.

I've written reviews before, but this is the first place I've ever rushed home and gone straight to the computer to review. The food is excellent and the service was both out-going and efficient. I've spent a lot of time in southern Mexico and the food at Poc Chuc is as authentic as it gets. We especially loved the Poc Chuc entree and the empanadas. It's not a chic or romantic spot, but Poc Chuc is definitly one of SF's best spots for delicious (and inexpensive) food.

  • Edward B.

absolutely love the taste of food....best one so far from the Yucatan that i know of...the waiter was just hilarious and very friendly. he even mentioned to us that since they had no liquor license at the moment that the make up for it in food....definitely will be one of my favorite little restaurants to go to....i would give it 5 stars if it had liquor to serve and a bit bigger menu selection....definitely recommend for Yucatan cuisine

  • s a.

Muy saboroso! I went to Poc Chuc for the 1st time last night and it was awesome. It is pretty much a hole in the wall restaurant but it was as authentic as it gets, and had very familiar options to what I saw when travelling in the Yucatan. The salbute is pretty good, although the tortillas could be a little crispier. The guacamole and tortilla chips were super fresh and delicious. For my entree I ordered the Poc Chuc, which is basically a thinly sliced, grilled pork dish. Everything we ordered was totally fresh and the portions are huge! so beware if you don't have a big appetite. The only reason I took away 1 star is because they do not serve alcohol here, but the agua frescas are very good. I recommend the jamaica agua fresca, which is hibiscus juice. Anyway, friendly staff, a cozy family feel, affordable and great food. I highly recommend it!

Great authentic food. Living in Outer Sunset I always have a craving for food in the Mission. This is a place I would happily go back. We had the lunch apps platter, and the Poc Chuc with a Jamaica drink and the rice drink.

Just stellar. We were in the Mission on a, er, well, mission to get brunch. Ti Couz is always the default option, but we wanted something different, and I remembered that this place had been recommended to me by Jonboy. My lovely lady got an array of appetizers, and I got the signature Poc Chuc. Everything was delicious, tender, and tasty. I loved everything about my meal, from the meat down to the tortillas. I'll be happily returning in the near future.

every single entry here was delicious!!! the poc chuc so full of flavor and cooked to perfection, we had the sample platter with panuchos, salbutes etc and we ate every single piece of food it came on that huge plate. it is way nicer than other yucatecan restaurant i've seen. it;s like a hidden gem. i love this place.

We had salbute, empanadas, Pollo Pibil, and Poc Chuc. The first two (appetizers) were great---bright flavors, correct seasoning, juicy meats and flavorful sauces. The main dishes were so so. Pork from Poc Chuc was dry/overcooked and needed more salt. Pollo was tender and flavorful, but sauce wasn't interesting, the skin was soggy and the dish overall was a bit too homey. Good service. Overall, good food at reasonable prices, worth a try, but nothing special.

Yummy! Went here on a Tuesday evening around 9pm. most of the tables were filled, but we got a table as soon as we walked in, probably b/c it was a Tuesday. The owner/server was very nice, food was soooo good. Only thing is that the dinners didn't come with rice and beans, had to order separately. But we ordered 2 orders of Pork Pibil, appetizer sampler. Bill was $40. Nice change from the taquerias, but the flavors were amazing. YUM! I'd definitely go back. just not on a weekend cuz it would probably be real busy.

Enjoyed a great meal last year, so planned to bring friends back. We planned an early Sunday dinner. Road BART to Mission 16th station, kind of a seedy area, but worth the great food. Guess what? Closed on Sunday. Please update the Sunday hours! Walked to Bar Tartine and had a great meal.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque.
